FSIS Issues Public Health Alert For Ready-To-Eat Deli Meat Products

FSIS Issues Public Health Alert For Ready-To-Eat Deli Meat Products

Congressional and Public Affairs(202) 720-9113Adrian Gianforti WASHINGTON, March 16, 2010 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is issuing a public health alert due to illnesses possibly associated with ready-to-eat (RTE) deli meat products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
Recommendations For People At Risk For Listeriosis Wash hands with warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling raw meat and poultry. Wash cutting boards, dishes and utensils with hot, soapy water. Immediately clean spills. Keep raw meat, fish and poultry away from other food that will not be cooked. Use separate cutting boards for raw meat, poultry and egg products and cooked foods. Do not eat hot dogs, luncheon meats, bologna or other deli meats unless they are reheated until steaming hot. Do not eat refrigerated pâté, meat spreads from a meat counter or smoked seafood found in the refrigerated section of the store. Foods that don't need refrigeration, like canned tuna and canned salmon, are safe to eat. Refrigerate after opening. Do not drink raw (unpasteurized) milk and do not eat foods that have unpasteurized milk in them. Do not eat salads made in the store such as ham salad, chicken salad, egg salad, tuna salad or seafood salad. Do not eat soft cheeses such as Feta, quesco blanco, quesco fresco, Brie, Camembert cheeses, blue-veined cheeses and Panela unless it is labeled as made with pasteurized milk. Use precooked or ready-to-eat food as soon as you can. Listeria can grow in the refrigerator. The refrigerator should be 40° F or lower, and the freezer 0° F or lower. Use an appliance thermometer to check the temperature of your refrigerator.
FSIS was informed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) that products subject to recall in Canada may have been exported to the United States. This public health alert was initiated after positive test results and an investigation by CFIA in response to a listeriosis illness outbreak. At this time, no confirmed linkage has been made between the products subject to recall and the reported illnesses. This is an ongoing investigation and as more information becomes available, FSIS may proceed with a recall action. Implicated products produced by Siena Foods LTD, a Toronto, Ontario, establishment, include, but are not limited to, "Cacciatore Salami, Mild," "Coppa," "Prosciuttini," "Prosciuttini Hot," and "Prosciutto Cotto." The individually wrapped products have variable weights and a "Best Before" date through June 22, 2010, as well as the establishment number "Est. 212" inside the CFIA mark of inspection. However, the original brand and/or best before dates may not have been transferred at the deli counters to consumer packages. Persons who may have purchased any of these products and do not know original brand and code are advised to check with their retailer or supplier to determine if they have the affected product. Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis. However, listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy. Consumers with questions about the recall should contact the CFIA at (800) 442-2342 / TTY (800) 465-7735. Media with questions about recall should contact CFIA Media Relations, at (613) 773-6600. Consumers with food safety questions can "Ask Karen," the FSIS virtual representative available 24 hours a day at AskKaren.gov. The toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854) is available in English and Spanish and can be reached from l0 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday. Recorded food safety messages are available 24 hours a day.

Texas Firm Recalls Ready-To-Eat Beef Product due to Possible Salmonella Contamination

Texas Firm Recalls Ready-To-Eat Beef Product due to Possible Salmonella Contamination

Recall Release
CLASS I RECALL
FSIS-RC-016-2010
HEALTH RISK: HIGHCongressional and Public Affairs(202) 720-9113Catherine Cochran WASHINGTON, March 9, 2010 - Ruiz Foods, Inc., a Denison, Texas establishment, is recalling approximately 115,700 pounds of a ready-to-eat (RTE) beef product that may be contaminated with Salmonella. The packages of beef product contain as an ingredient the specific Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP), which was previously recalled, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. Due to potential Salmonella contamination, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall of the HVP product on March 4, 2010. A recall of the beef product was warranted because the HVP ingredient was added after Salmonella prevention steps were applied. The products subject to recall include: [View Labels]
8.4 ounce boxes of "TORNADOS RANCHERO BEEF & CHEESE."
Recommendations for Preventing Salmonellosis:Wash hands with warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling raw meat and poultry. Also wash cutting boards, dishes and utensils with hot soapy water. Clean up spills right away. Keep raw meat, fish and poultry away from other food that will not be cooked. Use separate cutting boards for raw meat, poultry and egg products and cooked foods. Cook raw meat and poultry to safe internal temperatures before eating. The safe internal temperature for meat such as beef and pork is 160° F, and 165° F for poultry, as determined with a food thermometer. Refrigerate raw meat and poultry within two hours after purchase (one hour if temperatures exceed 90° F). Refrigerate cooked meat and poultry within two hours after cooking.
Each box contains 3 Tornados. "Est. 17523A" and code numbers "09357," "10023," "10028," "10030," "10031," or "10032" are ink jetted on the side panel. The RTE product was produced on Dec. 23, 2009, Jan. 23, 2010, Jan. 28, 2010, Jan. 30, 2010, Jan. 31, 2010, and Feb. 1, 2010. Ruiz Foods, Inc. distributes RTE beef product nationwide to retail and food service establishments. Only those products distributed for retail sale are subject to recall. All product distributed to food service establishments undergoes a lethality treatment to kill Salmonella before consumption. FSIS has received no reports of illnesses associated with the consumption of these products. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact a physician.According to FDA's March 4, 2010 release, FDA conducted an investigation after a customer of an FDA regulated firm reported finding Salmonella in the HVP ingredient. This resulted in the subsequent recall of the contaminated HVP products. FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.Consumers with questions regarding the recall should contact the company's Consumer Line at 1-800-SPANISH or 1-800-772-6474 . Media with questions regarding the recall should contact Pat Summers, Media/Public Relations Representative, at (559) 222-7100. Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. Salmonella infections can be life-threatening, especially to those with weak immune systems, such as infants, the elderly, and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy. The most common manifestations of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within eight to 72 hours. Additional symptoms may be chills, headache, nausea and vomiting that can last up to seven days. Consumers with food safety questions can "Ask Karen," the FSIS virtual representative available 24 hours a day at AskKaren.gov. Dean's Dip Voluntary Recall
Recall Reason: Ventura Foods, LLC is voluntarily recalling seven of its Dean's® Dip products, with specific production dates, because a flavor enhancer may be contaminated with salmonella. The flavor enhancer is made by an ingredient supplier, Basic Food Flavors, Inc., in Las Vegas. The voluntary recall involves a flavor enhancer called hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP), which is used to make Dean's Creamy Taco Dip. The other six Dean's Dip products were manufactured on the same equipment, at about the same time, so they're being recalled as well. There is no evidence of salmonella in any Dean's Dip product or in any other Ventura Foods products.Pack/Codes: The Dean's Dip recall impacts only the products listed below with the specific UPC code and "Sell By" dates.
