FDA has informed us that they will be advising consumers not to eat raw alfalfa sprouts

FDA has informed us that they will be advising consumers not to eat raw alfalfa sprouts. The warning is expected to be issued tonight or Sunday.
FDA has linked a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Saint Paul to alfalfa sprouts. This outbreak began in March and is on-going. Currently 31 cases in Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Utah and West Virginia are linked to this outbreak. This is the same strain of salmonella that caused an outbreak from sprouts in Nebraska in February.
It appears that the salmonella is originating from a single, major seed supplier. The seeds have been distributed to primary sprouters and other distributors in at least 20 states, resulting in the nationwide alert. Also, these seeds have a long "life" and may still be in distribution channels.

The sprouting industry is advised to follow the FDA guidance for producing safe sprouts. This guidance includes both rinsing the seeds in an antimicrobial solution prior to sprouting and testing the sprouting water for the presence of pathogens. As part of this investigation FDA will be reviewing how closely sprouters are complying with the FDA guidance to assess whether changes in the guidance are needed. Information to date suggests a number of sprouters have not been following the recommended control measures.

FDA recommends that retailers/restaurants obtain sprouts only from reputable suppliers who are adhering to the guidance. However, since consumers will be advised not to eat raw alfalfa sprouts, it is unclear how retailers will be able to distinguish those spouts that were produced following the guidance and should therefore be safe to sell. We have asked FDA for further clarification on this.

FDA has asked that we share with them suggestions for narrowing the scope of this advisory including how to identify sprouts that were produced according to the FDA guidance. We will have another conference call with FDA on Monday so please let me know if you have any thoughts on how we might better manage this situation.

Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella Inc., Terra Bella, Calif., is voluntarily expanding its recall of roasted pistachios to include all lots of roasted in

The FDA and the California Department of Public Health continue to investigate Salmonella contamination in pistachios and pistachio products. Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella Inc., Terra Bella, Calif., is voluntarily expanding its recall of roasted pistachios to include all lots of roasted in-shell pistachios and roasted shelled pistachios that were produced from nuts harvested in 2008. The firm is also recalling those raw shelled pistachios from the 2008 crop that are not subsequently roasted prior to retail sale. The pistachios may be contaminated with Salmonella. Initially, the firm's recall was limited to certain lots of roasted pistachios. Information from the joint FDA and California Department of Public Health inspection indicates the presence of Salmonella in critical areas of the facility and the potential for cross-contamination between raw and roasted products. After this information was shared with Setton, the firm decided to expand its recall.Visit http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/pistachiorecall/index.cfm to search for pistachio product recalls for more information. The FDA has now determined that three environmental samples and one finished product sample obtained during the inspection of Setton Pistachio Inc. were positive for Salmonella. The same Salmonella type (Salmonella Montevideo) with the same genetic fingerprint was found in all four samples. FDA has provided PulseNet, the CDC database of bacterial DNA fingerprints, with the DNA fingerprints of the Salmonella strains found in association with the company's products. Some of the DNA fingerprints of the Salmonella strains from the pistachio products match the DNA fingerprints of Salmonella strains from recently ill persons already in the PulseNet database. This particular strain of Salmonella also has been isolated from a stool sample in a child who developed gastroenteritis and who is reported to have consumed pistachios that were sourced from Setton Pistachio. In addition, this specific Salmonella fingerprint matches a number of other clinical isolates in the PulseNet data base. However, it is important to recognize that when a patient's isolate has a relatively common DNA fingerprint pattern (such as this one) that matches that of a food isolate, it does not necessarily follow that the patient's illness was related to that food. CDC is investigating whether the other cases infected with this strain of Salmonella have had exposure to pistachios from Setton Pistachio.Because the pistachios were used as ingredients in a variety of foods, this expanded recall will affect many products and is expected to result in other recalls. The FDA has created a searchable database of recalled products at http://www.fda.gov/pistachios/ and will continue to update the public as its investigation progresses. Consumers should not eat pistachios or food products containing them (such as pistachio bakery goods and pistachio ice cream) until they can determine that the products do not contain pistachios recalled by Setton. It is encouraged to view this webpage frequently as the list of recalled products continues to expand. The FDA is advising wholesalers, retailers, and operators of restaurants and food service establishments not to sell or serve any pistachios or pistachio-containing products until the source of the pistachios can be determined. Firms should check with their suppliers to determine whether the source of the pistachios is Setton. If the source is Setton and the products are subject to this recall, then the pistachios and pistachio products should not be sold. The FDA is helping the pistachio industry address the public health risks associated with Salmonella and to understand appropriate control procedures to prevent contamination. As part of this effort, on April 3, 2009, the FDA issued a letter to pistachio processors in the United States reminding them of their legal responsibility to ensure that the products they are providing are safe for consumption. The FDA intends to examine current pistachio industry practices and issue guidance to the industry that provides additional information on measures to be taken to prevent Salmonella contamination.CAL-PURE co-op of California pistachio growers and the Western Pistachio Association have established a Web site that lists firms that have informed the web site sponsors that their products do not contain pistachios from Setton. Information on this Web site has not been verified by the FDA, and the Agency is not responsible for its contents: www.pistachiorecall.org.Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. There is no action required of local health departments at this time. However, during the course of routine inspections, if pistachio products originating from Setton Pistachio, Inc. are found, appropriate enforcement actions should be taken to prevent the further sale and distribution of these products.

Please review the following message from Alan Talarsky, Environmental Scientist 1, Food and Drug Safety Program, DHSS regarding the following Class 1 Recall issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc. announced that it is expanding its voluntarily recall of pistachios to include all roasted shelled pistachios and roasted in-shell pistachios from its 2008 crop due to potential contamination with the Salmonella organism. The Company is also recalling raw shelled pistachios from the 2008 crop that are not subsequently roasted prior to retail sale. The brands packaged for retail sale subject to recall can be found in the table below. The voluntary recall was expanded as a precaution. Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella's raw in-shell pistachio shipments are NOT affected by this recall expansion. To date, there have been no confirmed cases of salmonellosis associated with the Company's products. Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. On March 30, 2009, the Company announced a voluntary recall of specific lots of bulk roasted shelled pistachios, certain tote bags of roasted in-shell pistachios, and Setton Farms brand roasted salted shelled pistachios in 9 oz. film bags. The Company is sending recall notices to its commercial customers who received recalled bulk products with instructions for returning or destroying the recalled products and for notifying their customers of the recall. Firms that have further mixed, used as ingredients, repackaged, or distributed the recalled bulk products are being advised to recall those products and contact their local FDA recall coordinator. For retail products, consumers should return them to the place of purchase or destroy them. The recall is being undertaken with the knowledge of the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Perk-Up, Inc. is recalling these products because the chicken base products do not meet poultry products inspection or poultry exemption requirements.

WASHINGTON, April 3, 2009 - Perk-Up, Inc., a New York corporation having a principal executive office in White Plains, NY, is recalling 114,540 pounds of chicken base products that were ineligible for import to the U.S., the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. Perk-Up, Inc. is recalling these products because the chicken base products do not meet poultry products inspection or poultry exemption requirements. Specifically, it could not be determined that the poultry ingredients used in the chicken base products were prepared under inspection as required by federal regulations or under an eligible foreign inspection system determined to be equivalent. The poultry ingredient is determined to be ineligible when the source of the ingredients cannot be determined. The products subject to recall include: [View Labels]

5-pound bags of "PANDA BRAND CHICKEN BASE CONCENTRADO DE CALDO DE POLLO." Each package also bears the case code "2700200." The chicken base products were imported from China on various dates from May 2008 to September 2008. The chicken base products were sent to distribution establishments nationwide. The problem was discovered after FSIS personnel identified the chicken base products in the marketplace. FSIS has received no reports of illness as a result of consuming this product.Consumer and media questions regarding the product or the recall should be directed to Perk-Up's general counsel, Seth Akabas at (212) 308-8505 ext. 218, or (212) 308-8516. The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service issues import permits based on animal health considerations, specific to a country or region.
