Specific Date Codes of Mrs. Smith’s Soda Shoppe Lemon Meringue Experience Product Quality Issue

There is a product quality issue on specific date codes of Mrs. Smith’s Soda Shoppe Lemon Meringue Pie. The specific product affected is:

Mrs. Smith’s Soda Shoppe Lemon Meringue Pie carrying date codes beginning with “6Z” only
UPC 27700-04006

We are sending out a market withdrawal request to all retailers that carry this product, and have all product on hold at DCs. This is a texture performance issue only and not a food safety issue. Product testing indicates that product is not freezing correctly, thus delivering a watery, tapioca-like filling that is unacceptable to consumers.

Please instruct your stores that carry this product to have any Mrs. Smith’s Soda Shoppe Lemon Meringue Pie carrying date codes that begin with 6Z to be processed as Unsaleable Product and sent to reclaim by close of business on April 3rd, 2009.

Be aware: new Guidelines become effective on April 6th, and any claims received at Schwan’s Consumer Brands on or after this date will be subject to the new Guidelines.

To assist you in determining if your customer has affected product, we’ve attached a tracking list of shipments of these specific date codes. We've also attached a jpg indicating where the date code can be located on the packaging, and a jpg of the package front itself.

Again, this is not a food safety issue, only a product quality issue. We apologize to you and your customers for the inconvenience, and we are taking steps to further address the issue. Thank you for your help in this matter.

Steps Being Taken to Correct the Issue:
Product Development and co-packer will correct the product, create new ingredient statement and nutritions, & develop new packaging;
